Americans have faced a roughly 30 percent increase in the price of groceries, housing, and many everyday necessities under President Biden, according to Sen. Tom Cotton. While inflation has slowed under Republican leadership, its effects continue to impact families across the country.

Cotton criticizes the Democratic Party's proposed expansion of government welfare, regulation, and taxation—described by some Democrats as a "socialist" approach—arguing it would further increase living costs for American families.

Drawing on historical examples, Cotton points to countries like Venezuela, Cuba, and the Soviet Union, where socialist policies led to economic decline characterized by shortages, inflation, reduced investment, and higher prices. He notes that Venezuela, once poised to be one of the wealthiest nations in the Western Hemisphere, suffered devastating economic consequences from nationalizing industries, reckless spending, and price controls, resulting in hyperinflation where a loaf of bread eventually cost millions of bolívars.

More than six decades after its communist revolution, Cuba still imports up to 80 percent of its food and endures chronic shortages. Similarly, citizens behind the Iron Curtain in the Soviet Union experienced persistent shortages of basic goods such as butter, meat, shoes, coffee, household appliances, and automobiles.

These historical patterns, Cotton suggests, serve as warnings against adopting similar socialist policies in the United States.
