Allegations of domestic abuse against Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) have intensified scrutiny in his reelection race, once considered a safe Republican seat. Miller has vehemently denied the claims and filed a defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, who alleges he left bruises and hurled scalding water at her while their infant daughter was present. The couple married at Mar-a-Lago in 2022 and divorced last year.

These allegations have led several race analysts, including Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball from the University of Virginia Center for Politics, to downgrade Miller’s seat from “Safe Republican” to “Leans Republican.” Despite this, Miller remains in a relatively strong electoral position.

The controversy has energized Democrats, who see an opportunity to compete in a district that President Trump won by 11 points in 2024. Several Democrats and the Democratic Women’s Caucus have called for Miller’s resignation or a House Ethics Committee investigation in the past week.

This development occurs amid heightened bipartisan attention to misconduct allegations against members of Congress. Similar cases include Republican Tony Gonzales (Texas), who resigned after admitting to an affair, and Democrat Graham Platner (Maine), who withdrew from a Senate race following rape accusations he denied.
