A deadly explosion at the Baotou Steel Group’s plant in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, that killed 10 people and injured 84 was caused by a leak due to corrosion on the inner wall of a steam storage pressure vessel, according to an official report released on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026. The report by the Inner Mongolian emergency management department identified a series of failures contributing to the accident, including poor maintenance, design defects, chaotic safety management, and improper on-site emergency response. It also criticized local authorities in Baotou city and Kundulun district for failing to properly carry out their regulatory duties, recommending disciplinary action against 62 individuals, including local officials.
Prosecutors in Kundulun have approved the arrest of seven employees from the plant and recommended further investigations into six others. Baotou Steel Group and other firms involved in the project have been penalized, and local authorities have submitted a written self-criticism to higher levels of government.
