Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville has predicted that the 2028 Democratic primary will be the decisive moment for the party's future direction, rather than the 2026 midterm elections. Speaking to Fox News Digital on August 7, 2026, Carville emphasized that Democratic primary voters will ultimately settle the party’s path amid rising influence from its socialist wing.

Carville expressed strong criticism of controversial streamer Hasan Piker, who has made contentious statements including a claim that America deserved 9/11, which he later retracted. "I am not going to be in the same party with Hasan Piker," Carville said on "The Sunday Briefing," adding, "If he becomes a force in a Democratic Party, I'm out of here."

He acknowledged that both the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) faction and the party's governing wing will have robust representation in upcoming contests. Carville warned of a potential schism if the DSA wing gains power, stating, "Everyone claims they're the ascendant ring, alright, on the 2028 presidential election, and this can only be resolved at the presidential level. It cannot be resolved at the state level."

Carville also noted that the party’s future cannot be settled through media debates or opinion pieces but must be decided by Democrats themselves at the ballot box. "And this can't be solved through op-ed pieces, it can't be solved through cable TV network packages, panels, it can only, and that's the way it should be, that the Democrats themselves have got to settle on the direction of their party, and they're going to have all the options, and we'll see just how popular this is," he said.

The comments come amid a growing number of far-left Democratic candidates winning primaries in multiple states, causing concern among more moderate party members. Senator Joe Manchin has also criticized the party’s left wing, claiming it seeks to dismantle established norms as midterm elections approach.
