US President Donald Trump on Monday, August 10, 2026, demanded that Iran pay compensation for people he said had been killed or seriously wounded in conflicts involving Iran. Trump made the statement on his Truth Social service, saying, "I am likewise demanding compensation from Iran, for all of the people that they have killed and gravely wounded with their roadside bombs and many conflicts, for which they are famous."
Trump's demand came as hopes faded for an imminent deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage. He said he was responding to Iran's earlier call for Washington to meet conditions, including compensating Tehran for damages caused since the US and Israel launched strikes on Iranian territory more than five months ago.
Additionally, Trump called on Iran to compensate "families of those killed on the USS Cole," referring to the October 12, 2000, attack on the US naval vessel in Yemen that killed 17 sailors. This attack has been attributed to al Qaeda, not Iran.
Trump has stated that the strikes on Iran aimed to prevent the Islamic Republic from developing nuclear weapons and to reduce its regional threat. He faces pressure to end the conflict, which is unpopular domestically ahead of the November midterm elections.
Earlier on the same day, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said talks with Oman on navigation arrangements through the Strait of Hormuz were "progressing smoothly and constructively," with an agreement reached on a shipping route map, though some technical issues on a joint statement remained unresolved.
Meanwhile, the Houthis declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea last month, citing a Saudi siege in Yemen, an allegation Riyadh denies. Saudi Arabia supports Yemen's internationally recognized government.
Oil prices responded to these developments, with Brent crude rising 4.25% by 5:20pm GMT (1:20am Singapore time).
